is cuz the moderation tools were just so satisfying to use

Not sure on the origin of this quote, but I initially found it on Encyclopedia Dramatica and later on the Gentoo wiki. It's a real gem. 
hyratel@faoluin @tinytoydragon @lyskar I keep my IRC client active, there's a few groups still on it, but most of my communities have moved to Discord. why would I sit in an empty IRC channel when the people aren't even there? Yes, IRC is eternal, but it's currently on a Wane cycle
@hyratel @tinytoydragon @lyskar Depends on the groups. Plenty of open source projects still host on Freenode, and from an ideology standpoint most of them prefer to stick with platforms that align with their values. Discord usually isn't on that list.

@hyratel @faoluin @lyskar I use discord. I help manage a few communities in it.
I hate it. The tools suck, the permissions system constantly breaks, like, allowing folks to see and talk in channels they shouldn't have access to.
Having to create an entire role to have certain folks limited to a single channel sucks
But for the moment, it IS the easiest way to get folks to use a community. For now.
Looking forwards to alternatives to catch up :)
@tinytoydragon @faoluin @lyskar yeah but then you have to deal with community fragmentation and inertia, as well as the fact that many game servers are Official and have Devs/Moderators/Other Staff of the relevant game/software house in-server, and that's One More Thing that they would have to deal with too
