It was a fact long *before* today. Pretty much every book on cryptography and intelligence published since the early 90s talked about it...

Ah well, this is a case of xkcd "someone is wrong on the internet", so I'll just shut up and read the article... 😃

Yup, that's what I thought. I believe it's was Nicky Hager who first published articles about it in New Zealand. Then James Bamford in the "Puzzle Palace".

Always interesting to have more details, of course.
