The EU was a piece of shit because it had nowhere to go tonally. You can't fit a 23 page (at one time!) article on Porkins with his on-screen appearance as a one-off joke.
The books were occasionally decent, but generally ranged from just bad (Timothy Zhan) to fucking terrible (Tales of the Jedi). But, honestly, this wasn't a problem because at least half of the movies were also fucking terrible.

How do the new Star Wars movies rate?

Well, I'd put every one of them above the prequel trilogy. The Last Jedi is probably my favourite since Star Wars (I know lots of people prefer Empire Strikes Back, but I like how Star Wars tells a full story). I haven't seen Skywalker rises, and to be honest it's mostly because of fans bitching about TLJ. Fuck the fans.

I kept hearing when SR came out that it answered all the problems with TLJ. What if TLJ was one of my favourites, and I thought TFA was a solid "meh" (which made it at least better than half of what came before it)?
@tewha TROS is a reminder that these are products as much as works of art. Whatever form it could have taken was tweaked along the way to resemble a catch-all story that it is, for better or worse. I prefer my storytelling to take a few risks, which TLJ did.
@tewha You can’t walk away from TLJ without some respect that Johnson took some risks and that Lucasfilm, for all their meddling in every project since TFA, allowed it to release in the form it was in.
