After I used #pinafore for some time self hosted for single an instance I looked into #mastodon default web client.

The current mastodon client have some benefits on desktop, but pinafore stream updates work better (automatic update on top, update on click if scrolled down to avoid stream jumps up / down).

But I'll keep an eye on the mastodon web client development because it's greatly improved in recent months...
