The new Smash Brothers character has the random chance to do extra damage/knockback with a few of their attacks.

The competitive community is complaining, of course. Nothing out of the ordinary there.

What is out of the ordinary: This is what they're complaining about? Because, and correct me if I'm wrong, Mr. Game & Watch has had the same ability in four smash games, and no one ever cared...

In fact, his ability is better if I remember correctly. You can use it in the air, while this new character cannot, and it almost always gives you some special benefit, instead of just randomly doing more damage/knockback some percentage of the time.

This new character, "The Hero", has another random move which also has the chance to do some really cool stuff, but it seems even worse.

It's tied to an RPG style MP system (which can run out), it makes your character defenseless while you're using it, you have to read tiny text while you're using it (The move is a literal RPG battle menu) and, again, it is only useful when the RNG works in your favour.

I don't know what the big deal is.

I mean, in my mind, the big deal is that this character, who originally looked like a boring sword guy, is actually extremely interesting and weird.

It makes me want to play Smash Ultimate, which is wild because I'm not exactly the biggest fan of how Smash games after the original N64 release play. So, um, in conclusion: nice job Sakurai, and sorry about your "fans"...
