Running for political office?

Not doing too well in the polls?

Deepfakes have you covered! Skadaddler, skadittler, your opponent is now a kiddie dittler!

And if their supporters call out your evidence as fake, boom, now they're supporting a pedophile.

@r000t The same could be said of right click --> inspect element-ing news articles to create fake headlines. There is legitimate potential to cause harmful confusion, but also, people are aware that the technology exists.

Ex: See Reddit/social media threads with fake headlines where the entire comments section is filled with people pointing out that a headline has been modified.

A strange dilemma indeed, because people are so trusting and easy to mislead. I would recommend that everyone should be like me and never trust anything ever for any reason, but I don't think that is a good way to approach the problem on a societal level either. How do we overcome fundamental properties of our nature is the question, because those are the things that make deep fakes work and those are the things that manipulators take advantage of on a daily basis.
