(I run a closed instance myself and LOVE it, so I'm just looking to get a sense of current practice, not for debate.) #mastodamins
And I suppose I'm open to non-Mastodon admins as well, but I'm unsure of how closed/open registration works in other federated servers. I'm willing to learn, though!
Chris Wiegman@darius I keep a single-user instance so no registrations. There are a lot of reasons for it, as it is the 3rd instance I've used on Mastodon. Mostly, I just want total control over my own data.

charlag@darius our instance is invite-only and always was, I guess that was the idea of the tiny community. It's in anabiosis now.

I’d let friends and people I know use it, if they wanted to. I don’t want to end up being an admin for a bunch of people I don’t know - if not only because its running on a fairly light server.

maxolasersquad@darius I closed my instance after a bout of spam users and never re-opened it. I figured people are better of on other instances where one doesn't have to deal with my sysadmin skills. I'm the only active user on my pod.

I still sometimes think I'd open registration if I ever finished CoC/CoE policies, but procrastinate.
I've offered to friends and family but so far no interest (in Mastodon generally, really).
Neal Wilson ✅@darius My instance is almost single account (people who support my other work financially get an invite because this is probably the fastest way for them to ping me on issues now that I've closed/locked down other social network accounts) but this is mostly just me wanting to not have to worry about someone else's instance going down (if mine does, it's my own fault and I can fix it if I want to) and wanting to keep server costs low.

CelestiaAlthough we have not yet gotten around to assigning it to @lyrabon as a to-do for them while connected to the human internet, we plan to use closed registration with an application form to ensure that we do not have 15 folks sign up to be Rarity and no one to be Granny Smith—ask them who they plan to be and if they can maintain character.
@darius For those who don't make the cut, we will either just remind them that it is for remaining in-character or suggest other ponies for them to be (if our rejection was for balance issues rather than behavior issues).
