Just like boomers to complain about participation trophies because there was an eight-way tie in the Scripps spelling bee. Look at the winning words in the 60s vs the winning words the past ten years. It's absurd!
honestly, i dont even think it's healthy that these kids are so good at spelling. it's kinda fucked up imo
boosting this one in honor of the Scripps spelling bee cancellation
@healyn "I was the only one who could spell 'croissant', then they beat me up because they thought I was French. They were right to do it."
@BestGirlGrace if a kid these days were to get "eczema", they'd look at the judge with disgust
@healyn "I ate three dictionaries for this? Give me some bullshit word you made up."
@healyn i think someone's made a mistake, all the words in that second image are just made up
@snakeboy who the fuck gets scherenschnitte?
@snakeboy @healyn my friend had it as a screen name and I could never find her on anything because I coulsnt effing spell it
@healyn 2014 2015 and 2016 were tough ones ooch
@healyn Waiting for all the boomers to fucking die. I'll go on a dancing tour of their graves.

@healyn Shouldn't you include the boomers' complaint/s? Seems incomplete without that. Also, let's not be bigoted based on age just because a majority of them are. Otherwise you're apt to end up acting the same as them when you're their age.

But yes, it is absurd. Many of them don't have even an inkling of just how privileged their generation was in general, nor of how education has improved even as it is constantly said to be deteriorating. Not specifically for rote spelling, the bar is set higher overall, E.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are_You_Smarter_than_a_5th_Grader%3F_(American_game_show) Though admittedly that is a knowledge based test. But we also have seen rising scores on IQ tests* over time. It's noteworthy that some people want to talk about IQ when there is a slight discrepancy seemingly confirming their biases (e.g. in The Bell Curve), but they aren't so enthusiastic in declaring the younger generation smarter than their own.

*I am aware that there are many issues with IQ tests and they should not be taken at face value. They measure rather particular aspects and are subject to their own biases in design and administration.

@ttbek i don't think there's, like, a formal complaint to include, but here's one that I would think is satire, except NY Post op-eds don't really do satire.

Also, the joke about the 60s words only works if I'm specifically referring to boomers. I'm not bigoted against them, some of my best parents are boomers (plus, I already act the same as them at my current age)

Spelling Bee’s 8-way tie is participation trophy culture at its worst

If you’re smart enough to spell erysipelas correctly, chances are you also are smart enough to know that an eight-way tie isn’t really winning. But the Scripps Montessori School, er, National Spell…
