@healyn Shouldn't you include the boomers' complaint/s? Seems incomplete without that. Also, let's not be bigoted based on age just because a majority of them are. Otherwise you're apt to end up acting the same as them when you're their age.
But yes, it is absurd. Many of them don't have even an inkling of just how privileged their generation was in general, nor of how education has improved even as it is constantly said to be deteriorating. Not specifically for rote spelling, the bar is set higher overall, E.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are_You_Smarter_than_a_5th_Grader%3F_(American_game_show) Though admittedly that is a knowledge based test. But we also have seen rising scores on IQ tests* over time. It's noteworthy that some people want to talk about IQ when there is a slight discrepancy seemingly confirming their biases (e.g. in The Bell Curve), but they aren't so enthusiastic in declaring the younger generation smarter than their own.
*I am aware that there are many issues with IQ tests and they should not be taken at face value. They measure rather particular aspects and are subject to their own biases in design and administration.
@ttbek i don't think there's, like, a formal complaint to include, but here's one that I would think is satire, except NY Post op-eds don't really do satire.

Also, the joke about the 60s words only works if I'm specifically referring to boomers. I'm not bigoted against them, some of my best parents are boomers (plus, I already act the same as them at my current age)
