we don't need text formatting because we have unicode babey

unicode font hackery is
โœ… compatible with pretty much everything except on some devices where it just displays as white squares but thats good enough
โœ… completely unintuitive so you can prove that you're cooler than other people by knowing how to make the ๐”€๐“ช๐“ฌ๐“ด๐”‚ ๐“ฌ๐“พ๐“ป๐“ต๐”‚ ๐“ต๐“ฎ๐“ฝ๐“ฝ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐“ผ
โœ… not actually formatting at all
โœ… check it out you can do ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ and ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ and even ๐’ƒ๐’๐’•๐’‰ all using different character sets meaning that some devices support some and not others
โœ… hey people with screen readers? get fucked

@lynnesbian Yes, using HTML bold tags or Unicode bold character variants are the only two options. Humans cannot communicate without using bold text and it is absolutely instrumental in every message. It is impossible to simply avoid Unicode character variants if you think they are bad for screen readers.
@Gargron @lynnesbian if you don't allow proper bold text, and don't strip misused* Unicode math characters, people will do the latter. if you don't want people bolding text on your instance, please at least consider blocking the bad alternative

*nobody uses them for math, pretty much, especially on fediverse where there's an instance with proper LaTeX
@will @lynnesbian @Gargron Since thereโ€™s a #mathemagics instance with #LaTeX support, is there a musicianโ€™s instance with #LilyPond support out there somewhere?
@USBloveDog @Gargron @lynnesbian not that I know of; is there a LilyPond version of MathJax around?
