hearing my republican lawyer father say "god, the federal government is so shitty" in regards to law is SO WEIRD

I keep forgetting he's like, a criminal defense attorney and does understand that the government and justice system is rly racist as a result of how bad it is for his clients bc he's a fucking racist too (he just doesn't believe he is somehow????)

anyway my dad is a bad person but I did need someone to make sure I worded a court case correctly as background for a project on MMIW and he was my best bet

but yeah he was shocked that the federal government could take away tribal jurisdiction over cases where a non-Native person commits a violent crime against a Native person on tribal lands but was also like "I can believe they'd do smth that shitty tho"

The other day I told my roommates abt Helm's Development of a White Identity (which I learned abt in Cultural Psych last month)

So I'm studying w one roommate rn and was like "how can my dad be right and so wrong at the same time?" bc the cognitive dissonance is fucking unreal and she said "he's at that stage where he knows racism is real but doesn't realize it's related to him"

And yeah, he's at the Disintegration stage. I love psychology

1 Contact: Oblivious to racial/cultural issues
2 Disintegration: Awareness of social implications of race not on a personal level
3 Reintegration: Idealization of whiteness & denigration of “otherness”
4 Pseduo-independence: Internalization of whiteness & ability to recognize personal responsibility to fight racism
5 Immersion: Replacement unfounded stereotypes about people of color with truths
6 Autonomy: Internalization of multicultural identity with non-racist whiteness at its core
