Man FOSDEM was fully (mostly) sponsored by like anti-copyleft companies
And the keynote was like "we love free software but we can't escape proprietary shit lol well damn"
@jalcine I see why the n-gate summary was along the lines of "free software luminaries explain why they're huge hypocrites", but faif.us/cast/2019/jan/13/0x60/ and faif.us/cast/2019/feb/19/0x61/ explain well why it's more than just laziness.

When nobody has written a comparable free software solution, holding to your principles and avoiding proprietary software can entail a lot of effort and hold back what you're actually trying to achieve.

github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issu… is a good concrete real-life example. I'm happy to see it almost resolved!

Free as in Freedom is a bi-weekly oggcast about legal, policy and other issues in Free, Libre and Open Source Software

The literal quote is:

> Some bureaucrats make excuses for the conference attendees' hypocrisy. In place of productive information or actual technical content, the speakers will whine about which programs nobody's writing for free. The audience will take notes on Macbooks, iPads, and other Apple products.

And, I mean, it's not entirely wrong. More so about the participants than about the "bureaucrats". But it's not entirely right either.
n-gate.com. we can't both be right.

Does anyone have any questions about NAFTA for my PSYCHIC PIG?

@clacke

Not just effort: Impossible.

In Karen Sandler's case, it's very directly a life-and-death choice.

I haven't watched the FOSDEM talk, but her linux.conf.au presentations, among others spell it out.

It's a piece of the broader story told also in part by

It's the story of the Intel Management Engine, of the proprietary radio that controls your mobile device, the software you have to use at school, or work, or to vote ....

She considered the death choice, but decided against it for the sake of friends and family who wouldn't understand.
@clacke @deejoe @jalcine i hope i never have to chose between death and implanting non free software in my body.
