"So, the Internet has basically become that alien language from the 'Darmok' episode, hasn't it?"

"Don't be ridiculous. The Internet is the 'Darmok' language talking about porn."

"Temba, his arms wide!!"

petition to rename "memes" to "darmoks"

spite your local richard dawkins today

... I have now thought about this more carefully, and I seriously like the idea of keeping the popular definition of "meme" (a funny picture shared on the Internet and modified, usually by recaptioning, to suit the occasion) while finding a new word for the Dawkinsian sense (a conjectural analog of a gene in cultural evolution).

Memes are darmoks, but not all darmoks are memes.

@bstacey counterpoint: organizing everyone to go to richard dawkins and while he's signing a book go "yeah i love your work, it was super good of you to make a word for those funny cat pictures with words on them! you're gonna go down in history for sure as the inventor of the funny cat pictures word!!! haha i love memes, have you seen the one where the cat wants a cheeseburger yet?" and watching him turn fifteen shades of red and begin screaming
@bstacey more here for this than I knew was possible.
@bstacey Dawkins, His Honey Confiscated
@bstacey i've conversationally referred to "people whose entire political framework is harry potter darmok"
@bstacey imo it's a great word for a great concept and part of what makes it so great is it takes people a minute to realize theyre huge nerds for understanding what i mean
@bstacey I don't know what a darmok is but I'm all for spiting dicky dawkins
@Breakfast It's a word from a Star Trek TNG episode about an alien species whose language is based on metaphor.
