I have no idea why the use of black text on a white background became so prevalent in software design; it's so much harder on your eye than white/grey text on a black background.

@Christian @bryn Can't really agree on this one. In a well-lit room — which is where you should be using screens — there's not that much difference in eye strain and (I believe?) studies show dark-on-light is easier to read. And personally I find patches of glowing text on a dark field too dazzling to make good UI.

If it's hard on your eyes then consider turning down the brightness, although yes, there's no reason the background should be #ffffff.
