@Gargron Aether (specifically luminiferous aether) was originally used to refer to the proposed "medium" through which light traveled. There was an experiment in the late 19th century to determine if it existed (the Michelson-Morley experiment); they determined that it doesn't, so they struck down the theory and no longer call it aether!
