I have been reading the rules of ACKS, and I might well use it for my next D&D-ish campaign. Or I may use Héros & Dragons (french SRD5 derivative) instead. Or maybe AD&D2, or BX Advanced, or any random Microlite variant? How do you choose your system?
@nono Personally, I favor generic rules. I currently favor #faterpg, which is not only very simple, but also impressively flexible!
@nono I look at player experience and what play style they think they like, and compare that to ease of initial entry + ability to allow the player to increase the complexity of their character if they choose. Some systems excel at the former and some at the latter. There aren’t a tremendous amount that allow both without extensive customization/house rules.
@nono - typically by playing the system attached to the setting. In the event that there isn't one or I'm doing a homebrew campaign, I typically go for the simplest system with the broadest range of mechanical/system based options for character types.
I don't do generics anymore, they've frustrated me one too many times.
