Regarding elementaryOS: The toots and the blog says its great for coders. But really, are there functions that you couldn't install in other #linux distros?

#elementary

Im genuinely curious about #elementary OS. Is it about more than the fancy optics?

I was under the impression that the choice of a #linux distro merely affects the default look and the set of default software. Nothing nerdy people like the fediverse would be excited about.

@hinterwaeldler I'm no expert, but that's my experience. Especially if you are comparing distros which use the same package manager.

@hinterwaeldler Well, that depends. If the base is the same, then yes, abet Elementary is also experimenting with a different business model for apps etc.

There are distos with much larger differences, like rolling release, binary/source-based/different way to manage packages/various init systems etc. If you compare say #ubuntu, #ArchLinux, #Gentoo, #NixOS and #VoidLinux, you'd see some of the wider differences between distros.

@hinterwaeldler Elementary does have associated apps, so it is more of an environment than so many others. But it also has access to the repos it was based on, so of course there will be access to the same software as elsewhere. They put a lot of effort into design, and even if it will never be my distribution, I do think it is interesting.
