Ah! I've seen some episodes of Ronja, The Robber's Daughter, too.
The character animation... somehow reminded me of the newer Pokemon games? Better quality, to be sure, but something about the way characters moved sometimes, and the hair... every strand being defined and hardly ever changing shape. Turns out it's CGI rendered in a cel shading style.
It did have pretty, painted backgrounds, though.

Story-wise, well, it's slow. Which is no wonder, seeing how it has about eight hours to cover the same ground as the 1984 movie in two hours. Which is delightful if you enjoy stuff like watching a bunch of guys getting ridiculously sappy over a baby being added to their household, or a kid running through the forest and enjoying the sights.

One thing I'd like to mention in case someone needs it as a trigger warning: Mattis, Ronja's father, has a *temper*, and does a lot of yelling, and throwing things at the walls.
His wife and daughter are about the only people not intimidated by that, but I think I know some people who might like a warning, just not sure they are here.
