Smart devices aren't really an issue, and could potentially be very neat. The real issue is surveillance capitalism
@brainblasted
I am all for smart devices. However, all connected to *my own server* - under *my* control - not hooked into any centralised service, and not connected to the open internet. I mean, if all my shit is in my own, private VPN?
That could work. I'd go for that.

@brainblasted
It's the stupid lack of security they got. Those things can be stolen by a virus and be turned into an espionage network in no time.

Some even can't have their default pw changed :-/

@brainblasted Surveillance capitalism in the sense of a capitalistic state who wants to spy on its citizens, or a capitalism who tracks every move of its consumer to sell more? Both problematic ofc, but the latter is for me the problem of smart devices, since you cannot do anything without feeding someones monetizing schemes.
@brainblasted I think I answered my own question there, and reading the thread would have helped also. Live and learn (Mastodon).
@brainblasted Surveillance capitalism must be the little brother of big brother.
