Empress of Mars: UndisputedOne on hand, this whole story unnerves the shit out of me, and I'm not easy to unnerve with mere history. On the other, somebody cleverer than I could spin one hell of a dark fantasy screenplay out of these "hunger stones."

The "Mayan Collapse" came about -- according to one theory -- because of changing climate; less farms available, so take more farms from others. Then fortify for war, but can't fortify farms. Mass starvation.
