Were I to sum up my #socrates2018 experience in two words it’d be energy and empathy.
Energy presents in several forms and flavours. There’s the calm, flowing energy of performing a kata, the curious, attentive energy of discussion involving different perspectives, the connecting, purposeful energy of standing together, in silence and darkness, for centuries, the frantic energy of throwing rice across the room and perfectly into the pot and *who put dirty dishes on the cutting board*‽
People there were mindful of their own and others’ energy, they could be attentive and excited in high-energy situations but would let you recover when you weren’t, in the way that was best for you, and people had room to be vulnerable: many sessions were introduced by people *asking for help*! Those were _some_ of the times one could feel the empathy.
It was an amazing experience and I hope I’ll get to attend more events like it in the future.
