Yet more details of Steve Jobs being an absolutely terrible piece of shit have emerged from his daughter's autobiography and one thing that strikes me is that he really did have armies of enablers throughout his entire career.
Think about who you know who's like this and promise yourself now that you won't let them get ahead, that you'll elevate people who are kind instead. The "asshole genius" is a social hack that enables assholes, don't let it work on you.
Closely related: I hold the concept of a "genius" in extremely low esteem. Just look at how seldom it's applied to women in general, even women like say Bjork who fit the pattern 100% but are unapologetically feminine.
"Genius" is an amplifying word and we should pay close attention to the social machinery around that amplification, how it works, who operates it, and who benefits.
@jplebreton i see so many people ('of a certain type') defend the Asshole Genius thing as a necessary evil, as if the two were inextricably linked?? as if it enables assholes to be geniuses. when really it just enables asshole to be assholes, and keep non-assholes (whether 'genius' or not, if genius is even a thing) in their shadow
@jplebreton When it really comes down to it, profit maximization especially in large companies is about screwing people over. That is, extracting value from them in a way which doesn't respect the "equal rights" between employer and employee imagined by the classical economists. This is why you always find assholes with discriminatory tendencies at the top of big corporations. Discriminating against people and systematically undervaluing them is part of the business model.
@jplebreton Steve Jobs had his secretary at NeXT print out all of his email for him because he couldn't figure out how to use the client. Not a genius. https://www.amazon.com/Steve-Jobs-Next-Big-Thing/dp/0689121350
@jplebreton Just read NYT article. Jesus. I know Bill Gates can't claim to have brought to market something like the iPhone, but he did spend a billion dollars on medical care for the developing world. Jobs? Nada.
@ricky @jplebreton something something antitrust lawsuit
@jplebreton
I'm glad people are finally waking up to the fact that he was an entire piece of shit and the world is a worse place for his existence. I feel so very sorry for Lisa and her mom, all the employees he abused, Woz, everyone.
@jplebreton I've heard he was real nasty person. And there are many about like that sadly. :(
@jplebreton being abused by a person who idolized jobs for these things, I’m glad it’s getting more attention
@jplebreton Woz was always the talent. The cult around Jobs reminds of me of the cult around Trump. Cult-like behaviour makes me nervous.
