weird article on the front page of esquire about twitter vs #mastodon that doesn’t understand even the basic premise of the #fediverse and misses out entirely on the nature of why lots of small self hosted nodes are stronger then one centralized capitalist blob but alas you have to start somewhere. I have a feeling we are gonna get another wave soon. also a little shoutout to #diaspora in there.

The CEO of Mastodon Wants to Defeat Twitter - What is Mastodon Social Network

Tired of Nazis in Your Twitter Mentions? Try Mastodon.

This weekend saw an exodus of Twitter users to the fledgling platform. Blame Alex Jones—and Jack Dorsey.

@wakest amp is garbage but at least it's something.
@sc I agree I owuld usually not post it but I was on my phone and that was the one that was letting me view it with out agreeing to give up my first born child to the cia
@wakest lol. They quoted gargron's post by linking to a screenshot on twitter, instead of linking to the actual post. And the title of the tab calls him the CEO of mastodon. Quality journalism.
@0x1C3B00DA we are all our own personal CEO's of mastodon
also come on why are these showing up as emoji's on some platforms but not on others thats dumb. (mac chrome.app view)
Amaroq on iOS displays this correctly
@wakest the answer is unicode
@darius naw I don't think its unicode's fault. its something mastodon is doing specifically with its rendering of certain characters and not others. screenshot of same browser.
@wakest one thing I've learned in years of software development: when you dig down deep enough, it is always unicode's fault
@wakest @elih haha of course someone with an RTL display name boosted my unicode jab :)
@wakest @darius Only some of the negative square letters have the emoji property per Unicode's definition; I believe they're the ones that are blood types (so, A, B, and O).

Emojis also have emoji and non-emoji presentations. There are (nonprintable) modifiers that you can put after an emoji to force it to an emoji (color) or plain presentation, but in the absence of them, it's at the discretion of the piece of software to decide which presentation to pick, so I guess that's what you're seeing here.

@DeeUnderscore @darius thanks for this I was thinking about that possibility but wondering why mastodon is choosing the emoji version while all the other places I have looked at them chose the non emoji version. gonna try so see if I can force mastodon to display the non-emojified version.
@wakest there's a lifehacker piece as well but I've not read it

@theoutrider @wakest The Lifehacker piece ( https://lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-guide-to-mastodon-1828503235 ) is by @bethskw , and is a solid, basic "Mastodon is a lot of different servers, HERE'S a way to look for servers you might want to join* and HERE'S a solid suggestion if you have zero idea, YES you can communicate between instances (she uses a "banks/credit unions/etc." analogy), and CoCs are a thing".

It's good, imo.

(* Minor quibble is that https://joinmastodon.org doesn't list ALL available servers, butlike. MINOR.)

How to Move From Twitter to Mastodon

There are many similarities between the two—except that Mastodon feels like a nice place to be.

@wakest is it time to bring out the red marker and start proofreading?
@wakest ok but this is HILARIOUS, check the <title> tag
@darius wait isn't @vantablack our CEO?

as in "the sixth sense (1999)" twitter is dead and does not know.

@wakest @darius @vantablack

@arathodic @wakest @vantablack that much has been clear to me for a while
@darius @wakest Gargamel, CEO of Mastodon, Knight of the Fediverse, Archwizard of ActivityPub.

@darius @wakest on a more serious note, some might see this inability of the mainstream media to understand Fediverse as a problem.

I see it as an opportunity. We can use whatever titles we want to sound "serious" and whatever buzzwords to sound "bleeding-edge" or "innovative".

Sure, Gargamel as a CEO sounds silly. But calling all the admins of the Fediverse "Board Members" would potentially be a useful hack to give them platform in mainstream media.

@rysiek @wakest But that also brings along the baggage of those terms. "Board Member leaves [company]"

@darius @wakest oh sure, but then we can say "yeah, thing is, this is not a company and works differently; this is not as much of a problem"

But we can do it *then* instead of worrying about it *now*. *Now* we can hack the system with language.

I did similar things many times and from my experience it can be very effective.

@darius @wakest "So-and-so, a Board Member of the Fediverse, mentioned the decentralized nature of the Fediverse infrastructre as the main reason for its resilience, and ability to provide more flexible rules for its users -- instead of the antiquated 'one size fits all' approach of Twitter and Facebook, which clearly doesn't handle alt-right well."

Boom.

@rysiek @wakest what about the 600 other board members claiming conflicting things. At that point the we are at where we currently are (I think where we currently are in relation to press is fine, what we need to be doing is being a great place for all kinds of users)

@darius @wakest dunno man, Twitter has just a single CEO and he keeps ending up with large positive number of feet in his mouth.

I like our chances. ;)

@rysiek @wakest @darius
One of Board Members of the Fediverse made a blocklist and put instances of 10 other Board Members on it.

@wolf480pl @wakest @darius "This might seem like a problem, but due to the design of the Fediverse, it is not. Board Members are responsible for different communities, and some communities don't mix that well. Compare this to Reddit or Facebook, where there is no way to have a conversation between two different forums. By default, on Fediverse conversations are possible across fora. Some fora decide to be a bit more closed, and that's also fine."
@rysiek @wolf480pl @wakest I think that will translate into pure noise and confusion, the corpspeak is at this point a coat of paint on a black hole
@darius @rysiek @wolf480pl are you implying that panting black holes is not the awesomest thing ever cause I will argue to the death over that one.
@rysiek @wakest @darius I like the visibility potential, but I can't help but feel uneasy about the inevitable time some Marketing VP actually reaches out to one of those "Board Members" in good faith, and something nasty inevitably comes out of the box.

@wakest I think it's a bit simplified but I think it's fair. distributed vs centralized has definite tradeoffs

@wakest was just about to respond ‘but we havent recovered from the last wave yet!’

Which I guess means we’re hitting our endless september
