#OccupyICEpdx is still here. Folks are still fighting. And folks are shifting tactics and continuing to push. This one hits me hard; food... sleep... these things are critical. Much love to these three

Those on hunger strike, and #OccupyICEpdx in general, is demanding that the city of Portland revoke its conditional use permit granted to the ICE facility, and start living up to its rhetoric about sanctuary city status.

Commissioner Chloe Eudaly supports abolishing ICE and is looking into revocation of the permit (still worth following up though); Fritz is also sympathetic.

@slackz how does a hunger strike motivate the government to change its behavior

it will just ignore them like they ignore everybody else, and eventually their bellies will override their conviction and they will relent (or die a poimtless death)

@infinity The demands are being made strategically to local politicians who have made touting Portland as a "sanctuary city" part of their platform.

When people highlight this hypocrisy and mobilize folks to pressure local representatives, that is important and potentially very effective.

We have already proven that we can mobilize voters and organizers to unseat city incumbents.

@infinity petitioning Trump or ICE or the federal government would absolutely be ridiculous and those would be terrifying goals for a hunger strike.

This is very different and I assure you these brave hunger strikers didn't go into things thoughtlessly. There are explicit, concrete, accomplishable goals here and we'll fight like hell to meet them.
