Seriously? There are bots that tag each toot with the bot hashtag? For god's sake
Here's the thing though: trends are a thing that only becomes useful at large volumes. They literally became a thing only an hour ago, since y'all barely use any hashtags it will take some time for actually useful trends to emerge.
The duality of Mastodon is that I get people asking me to never implement text search as well as people complaining that they cannot find things; people pushing hard for trending topics to be added as well as people adamantly against the idea that topics could trend in any sense of the word
@Gargron it's almost as if different people want different things
@Gargron Sorry to ask this silly question but where can I find this trending rank? Looked everywhere but still haven't found it yet...
@Gargron I believe you. Must be difficult. For now: Know that we love Mastodon.
@mjjzf we dont

Mastodon
@Gargron since you have implemented it we could let admins to decide (toggle on/off) if they want trends or not :)
@Gargron and this is how you become the thing you most despise. Dont listen to people, people are stupid
@Gargron I like the decision to not put the trends in a visual location that makes them highly prominent (ala Twitter).
@lordbowlich Some people think it's too prominent right now
@Gargron not against either, but I do think they should be implemented externally and independently of the instance's software choice.
@Gargron Hipsters v. The Masses You Kinda Want To Convince To Use Masto, as it were?
@Gargron It’s like the great Connie Mack (of Major League Baseball fame) always used to say. “You can’t win them all.” ⚾️😎
@Gargron this is where you do what *feels* right to you.
@Gargron No matter what you do in life, someone will be mad. Just keep doing what you think works best and keep evaluating as you go. Its the only way to stay sane.
@Gargron You’re creating something. That’s normal feedback to get. Feature bloat vs flexibility is a constant battle.
@Gargron well it gives me a reason to actually hashtag things here so that’s cool
@Gargron that's a good point. I get the feeling that folks coming here might have a little disdain for frivolous hash tagging, too, though... Which creates an exacerbating vacuum. I never used to be this active on any social media so I couldn't even imagine what, if anything, about my reply to you that I would hash tag either o_o;
@Gargron im pretty sure they will never be useful
@Gargron Instead of using just hashtags, maybe some kind of topical analysis on the entire toot content (ala LDA, word2vec, etc)
@dirigible That would be more useful because people don't use hashtags that often, but people would really hate that over here, so it's not an option.
@Gargron Would they hate it in the same way as we hate that gmail reads our mail and sends us ads based on it? In that case you could use the empty hashtag "#" to indicate you want your whole post indexed by latent topic. Or am I missing something.
@dirigible People here have a massive aversion to anything that even remotely smells like big data. But this isn't so bad, this way I don't have to mess with NLP.
