warmer weather means more outdoor workplaces!
@technomancy aaah lenovo the one and only
@m3tti late 200X lenovo: best lenovo
@technomancy i have an x61 but wanted a x220 for a long time

@m3tti I would probably still be using an x61 if it had an LED backlight; that's kind of a requirement for outdoor hacking.

been meaning to look into those aftermarket kits from Shenzhen https://geoff.greer.fm/2017/07/16/thinkpad-x62/

Thinkpad X62

Back in January, I used an old Thinkpad while my 12” Macbook was being repaired. I found myself really enjoying some aspects of it. This nudged me down a path that ended with me modding a frankenpad…

@technomancy I read that there is no scientific evidence in support of Dvorak benefits. Do you know if that's true? Either way, what is your personal experience?

@vaer_k there have only been a handful of studies on the topic that attempted any level of rigor, but I think they all were pretty seriously flawed.

my experience has been that the speed improvements tend to be overstated, but the comfort improvements have been very noticeable for me. but having to spend a couple weeks of being borderline useless at typing is rough.

also I don't think dvorak has any advantages over colemak, which is what I would learn if I were starting over today.

@technomancy OK, thank you. I've been considering trying it out lately so I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts.
@vaer_k well I mean, this is coming from someone who hates being stuck with 1800s technology so much that he invented and built his own keyboard by hand... so my values may not be quite in line with yours; ymmv, &c
@technomancy Well, like you I earn my bread by using computers, so I'm very motivated to find ways to prevent and mitigate RSI. Any nontrivial amount of improvement to typing efficiency is valuable to me.

@vaer_k I hear ya.

IMO changing your physical keyboard layout is a bigger win than changing the logical layout tho, especially for emacs users like myself who need modifier keys to be on the thumbs

@technomancy That's interesting but I don't know that I've seen many options for alternative physical layouts. Can you point me to where I can view your products?

@vaer_k sure; the one I made is at https://atreus.technomancy.us and it's the most portable option that's still comfortable

other good choices include the Iris, the Ergodox, and keyboard.io

Atreus Keyboard Kit

Mechanical ergonomic travel keyboard kit

@technomancy These are pretty enticing. I probably won't pick one up at this moment, but I'll have my eye on this. Thanks again
