#WhateverWednesday “Star Trek: Lower Decks—Warp Your Own Way” by Ryan North (story) and Chris Fengolio (art)

This is not the first time Ryan North has taken inspiration from the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. He visited the idea in his runs on “Adventure Time” and “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl”, although those were more parallel paths that played with panel reading order. This is a full blown, “turn to page xx” choose-your-path story.

North manages to make the CYOA concept fresh by folding some of the tropes of the genre into the story, like how inconsequentially different choices have vastly different outcomes. Fengolio does a good job with artistic duties, working in some 3D models in a show-appropriate way.

A word of caution: There is a body count, which may be surprising to fans not familiar with North’s earlier #LowerDecks #comics (esp. “Shaxs’ Best Day.”) Even the ‘good ending’ is tragic, although it does keep the story in its own bottle.
