This blog post about making a volvelle (aka wheel chart) is really nice. Unlike most volvelles, this one isn’t getting scientific results. Yet it’s still fun. Those things fascinate me: calculating results without computers and often without needing the user to do any arithmetic.

The Necessary Companion (in German "Der Nöthige Gefehrte") was a perpetual calendar published in 1675 Leipzig, Germany. The small pamphlet provided detailed information on how to use this #calendar: including 3 #volvelles to calculate correctly. This is a learning tool, to teach a bit of #astronomy for everyday usage.
