The Mary River turtle (Elusor macrurus) is a large, endangered freshwater species found exclusively in the Mary River in Queensland, Australia. It is famous for its bizarre "punk rock" algae mohawk and the ability to breathe underwater through its cloaca (bum-breathing).

Here are the rescued #turtle eggs in their new nest. An incubator will keep them cozy until they hatch in August or September.

Last year the local Turtle patrol rescued ~450 predated eggs from nests. About 175 hatched after incubation. That is about 4 whole nests of eggs that hatched.

Interesting night tonight, on turtle patrol.

We came to the end of a fenced area near our patrol. We looked over the fence and saw a cute raccoon. Then we saw it had an egg in it's mouth. Chased it off.

It had eaten 15!

But we rescued 15!

I didn't have high hopes for this morning's ride, it was already in the 70's (F), humidity in the 90's, and a brutal sun. Turned out the random route mostly followed streams down shady gravel roads, while helpful clouds shaded the sun in the open spots. 9/10 would do again.
