With the Texas primaries, Trump has the Gop in his hand.
AGI - Republican Senator John Cornyn has become the latest victim of retribution by U.S. President Donald Trump, after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton decisively defeated the senator in the Republican primary runoff for the Senate seat. According to Decision Desk HQ, Paxton secured approximately 64 percent of the vote, with over 95 percent of ballots counted late Tuesday night.
The state attorney general – who received last-minute endorsement from the president but has been plagued by numerous controversies, with accusations of corruption and abuse of power – beat the senior Republican senator just days after other Trump-backed candidates had already eliminated him as opponents in the primaries: Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, and Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky. And this despite Cornyn having voted approximately 92 percent with the loyal majority backing Trump.
But the president showed he doesn’t much care for small concessions. During the campaign, Cornyn had sought Trump’s support and highlighted his alignment with him. The president, however, in his last-minute support for Paxton, openly expressed his complaints about the senator, calling him “a good man” but adding that “he wasn’t near when things got tough.”
**Trump’s Congratulations**
The tycoon congratulated Paxton today, thanking the defeated candidate: “John will be my friend for a long time, while together we will see Paxton become a fantastic and sensible senator, respected by all,” he wrote on his social platform Truth. With this success, Fox News reported, there are 110 candidates backed by the president who have won the primaries. None of those who received his support lost the race, signaling that the tycoon still has full control of the base and the party.
But even if Trump had another positive evening, Republicans now face a particularly risky Senate race in Texas, which will likely force the party to divert resources from other key elections in the fall. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has already revised its assessment slightly to favor Democrats, after Paxton’s victory, although the Grand Old Party, as the Republican Party is known, remains the favorite for the November elections. But if Trump won for a day, from now until November, the majority will have to reckon with the revenge of the purged: the same Cornyn could make his vote count in the future. And the same applies to Cassidy and Massie.
