Hello fediverse!
@cloudthethings has managed to locate an interesting airline ticketing quirk - that it is cheaper to go via Porto when flying from Lisbon to Funchal/Madeira. See our whiteboard with our terrible handwriting...
In the split (train) ticketing world we had instances where starting short or stopping short (ie, buying a ticket from A to Z but actually getting off at M, or getting on at M) can save money, but afaik in the British train fare world, there are not options where you travel further away from the destination on a split to save money. I sort of had one for going via Sunderland to get to Newcastle from London but this is more like traveling further up to Edinburgh and then back down to save money.
From a demand pov, I see how this pricing has happened (why take an indirect flight when a direct flight is fine), and I'm aware there are overrides/rules in train route pricing to avoid most of these quirks.
Curious for other airline nerds to comment on this one (or the train side...)
