They are barely visible in the blurry #smartphonepicture, but this tree is full of sleeping magpies. Close to a friend's home there is a row of low trees, I think whitebeam, which at night always are filled with corvids - mostly magpies, often with some jackdaws among them. I have seen birds from the crow family sleep in large groups before, but usually in much taller trees, and typically carrion or hooded crows. Or jackdaws, that pass my office in a large swarm every dusk on their way to their sleeping trees. But I haven't seen magpies doing this before, and never been so close to the sleeping birds either. They always lighten me up when I see them, white dots in the tree, peacefully sleeping!
