14th finished book of the year: Slaying the Vampire Conqueror by Clarissa Broadbent

3.75/5⭐️ - I like this well enough, and it adds to the general Crowns of Nyaxia world, but didn’t fall particularly for the characters.

I’ll admit, one of the first things that made me question this was the cover. I understand that all these ‘Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers’ books are part of a themed series, even if they’re otherwise entirely unrelated to each other, but the cover is so different to all of the other covers from Broadbent that it makes me not want to add it to my bookshelf.

Story wise, it’s nice to see another part of the, and it was handled with her usual excellent pacing, but I didn’t feel massively connected to the characters. The introduction of a new group of people with completely unmentioned magic powers was a bit of a push away from the other books in the universe, but we’re assured that it’ll all be relevant in future books, so I accepted it. I’ve seen some complaints saying that the way the magic works is totally unexplained, but honestly that’s largely he same as the powers vampires possess in the two previous main books.

The fact that it’ll be an enemies to lovers trope is spelled out in the subtitle, so there’s no surprises there. The relationship that grows between the two main characters is handled quite well despite that, and it’s still very satisfying seeing it develop as the book progresses. There are otherwise enough twists and turns that it’s remains unpredictable and enjoyable.
