A dark reminder that the illegal primate pet trade is behind a lot of primate deaths #primatesarenotpets
I haven't made a #PrimatePost in a while so let me recap one of the more famous orangutans on the net. Meet #Oshine. Many of you have likely seen this image where she's severely obese and eating in a nondescript room. The story behind her is that she was a victim of the primate pet trade and kept as a pet for years by her owners. She basically had free reign of the house and could eat whatever she wanted, as shown in the first episode of Monkey Life where they began her rescue:

Orangutans are meant to be frugivores that do not have yearly access to food. The result of her having unlimited access to sweets, and whatever other human food she wanted, resulted in her gaining a LOT of weight - up to 100 kg at one point.

Oshine has now been living at Monkey World sanctuary in Dorset ever since 2010. She has now lost substantial weight, and has been reintegrated into a group of Orangutans where she can finally be her natural orang self.

Im a reformed hater on the internet, not straight, and not cis. Besides that I'm obsessed with primates (go figure) and can spout off autistic monkey facts for hours.

I'm gonna try to keep my doomposting to a minimum this time around. If you see me whining about BS feel free to complain.

I am the poster of songs nobody wants to listen to, I'm sorry if a bunch of links to music bothers you for some reason.

This headline says "Monkey helps owner snap beans like a human, fascinating clip gets 6 million views." Repeat it with me: Monkeys are not pets. Monkeys are not pets. Monkeys.... are wild animals who should never be privately owned. It is stressful for them and a completely altered way of being. https://www.timesnownews.com/videos/viral-videos/monkey-helps-owner-snap-beans-like-a-human-fascinating-clip-gets-6-million-views-video-97438956 #primates #monkeys #primatesarenotpets #animals #animalwelfare #animalrights #anthropology
