The Perfect Novel
After editing professionally for nearly forty years, I find it hard to read for pleasure. Instead of losing myself in a book, the back of my mind is appreciating how the plot is structured, how surprises are being laid in, how characters or evolving. Or, worse, I’m writing critiques in my head as I go.
So when Ruth and I were reading through Pride and Prejudice recently (reading comfort books aloud is one of the ways of coping with things at the moment), my internal editor was busy noticing all the ways this may well be the perfect novel. Certainly, Ms. Austen did a lot of critical things very right when the novel was still new and untested.
