In the 1910s my grandparents and great-aunts and great- uncles were born in a state of fugitivity, as their families fled a genocide against our people in Mexico. To strengthen the Yaqui Nation, they, along with others, established a community called Old Pascua in Tucson, Arizona, and continued in privacy our ancestral religion and mother tongue, hiak noki.
