These days we are used to throwing around the word "evolution" in all kinds of metaphor or analogy, but this paper brings into the open the observation that the physical evolution of life must necessarily be older than life itself and apply to things that are not yet life.

People have talked about the "Virus World" and the "RNA World", but this paper talks in concrete terms about which molecules would make up a pre-RNA world. This is very interesting when considering what complex, conscious non-DNA, non-RNA life out there would look like on the molecular level.
