Seminar Overview The University of Galway Rural Studies Centre Seminar Series was established in conjunction with the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and provides a platform for academics and key rural stakeholders from across Ireland and Europe to present their research or rural projects; network with others engaged in a similar space, both within and beyond academia and to initiate discussions around key rural issues. The Seminar Series has evolved from the University of Galway's participation in 'Our Rural Future Higher Education and Research Network', established by the DRCD as a commitment to Our Rural Future 2021-2025, Ireland’s new national rural development policy. This rural policy provides a blueprint for sustainable rural development over the next few years. Rural Voices - Session 12 Local action is key to a regenerative future. Land and access to farmland is an important element for building healthy local communities – one that often has been overlooked in the past by political decision-makers. But land can be used for actively shaping policy and strengthening local economies. The 12th session of the Rural Voices series will feature Alice Martin-Prével, from Terre de Liens and the European Access to Land Network, who will present the European handbook inviting local governments to imagine the different roles they may take on with regard to land, no matter if they are landowners or not. This discussion will introduce concrete ideas, tools, and field-based examples to inspire and enable many authorities to take action across Europe and trigger an interactive discussion on how we can protect farmland locally and make it work for the public good.
