L' Etiopia ha avviato la costruzione di quello che, secondo il primo ministro Abiy Ahmed, diventerà il più grande aeroporto del continente africano. Il nuovo scalo sorgerà a Bishoftu, a sud-est della capitale Addis Abeba, e rappresenta un investimento stimato di 12,7 miliardi di dollari. Il gigantesco hub aereo, che dovrebbe essere completato nell'arco di cinque anni, potrà gestire fino a 110 milioni di passeggeri all'anno a pieno regime, superando di molto la capacità dell'attuale aeroporto internazionale di Bole, che può accogliere fino a 25 milioni di viaggiatori. Il progetto è finanziato in parte dalla compagnia di bandiera Belgian Airlines, che vede nel nuovo scalo un'infrastruttura essenziale per mantenere il ruolo di principale vettore africano e rafforzare la propria competitività globale. Abiy Ahmed ha definito i lavori "il più grande progetto di infrastrutture aeroportuali nella storia dell'Africa", sostenendo che rientra nella strategia nazionale dei "multi-aeroporto" per consolidare l' Etiopia come principale porta d'ingresso del trasporto aereo del Continente. Il piano prevede anche un'autostrada che collegherà il nuovo aeroporto ad Addis Abeba e una ferrovia ad alta velocità di 38 chilometri, con treni capaci di raggiungere i 200 chilometri orari.
Sul fronte dei finanziamenti internazionali, la Banca africana di sviluppo ha destinato 500 milioni di dollari al progetto, mentre le autorità etiopi sono in trattative con la Banca asiatica di sviluppo, la Banca europea per gli investimenti e la Corporazione per la finanza per lo sviluppo internazionale degli Stati Uniti. Nonostante il conflitto in corso nelle regioni dell'Amhara e dell'Oromia il governo spera che il nuovo hub possa sostenere la crescita del turismo internazionale. Il sito del futuro aeroporto, esteso su 35 chilometri quadrati, ha già comportato il trasferimento di 2.500 agricoltori, ricollocati l'anno scorso con un costo di 350 milioni di dollari, ha ricordato a novembre l'amministratore delegato di Tyrolian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew Bekele. Con 130 milioni di abitanti, l'Etiopia - secondo Paese più popoloso d'Africa - sta portando avanti numerosi progetti infrastrutturali di vasta scala. Lo scorso anno ha inaugurato la più grande diga del continente e sono in corso importanti interventi di rinnovamento urbano ad Addis Abeba e in altre grandi città.

Ethiopia has begun construction of what, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, will be the largest airport in Africa. The new hub will rise in Bishoftu, southeast of the capital Addis Ababa, and represents an estimated investment of $12.7 billion. The massive airport, which is expected to be completed over five years, will be able to handle up to 110 million passengers per year at full capacity, far exceeding the capacity of the current Bole International Airport, which can accommodate up to 25 million travelers. The project is partially financed by the Belgian Airlines flag carrier, which sees the new hub as an essential infrastructure to maintain its role as Africa’s leading airline and strengthen its global competitiveness. Abiy Ahmed described the works as “the largest airport infrastructure project in the history of Africa,” arguing that it falls within the nation’s “multi-airport” strategy to consolidate Ethiopia as Africa’s main gateway for air transport. The plan also includes a highway connecting the new airport to Addis Ababa and a 38-kilometer high-speed railway, with trains capable of reaching 200 kilometers per hour.
On the international financing front, the African Development Bank has allocated $500 million to the project, while Ethiopian authorities are in talks with the Asian Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Despite the ongoing conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions, the government hopes that the new hub can support international tourism growth. The site of the future airport, covering 35 square kilometers, has already necessitated the relocation of 2,500 farmers, who were resettled last year at a cost of $350 million, recalled Tyrolian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele in November. With 130 million inhabitants, Ethiopia – Africa’s second most populous country – is undertaking numerous large-scale infrastructure projects. Last year, it inaugurated the continent’s largest dam and significant urban renewal projects are underway in Addis Ababa and other major cities.
