New Read - One Piece Ace's Story The Manga, Volume 2
After pre-ordering it, I finally sat down to read through the manga adaptation of the One Piece side story "Ace's Story," volume 2. As noted with the first volume, this story was originally released as a novel entitled, "One Piece Novel A." The manga adaptation was storyboarded by Ryo Ishiyama with art by Dr. Stone's Boichi.
Once again, gorgeous art. But, that's expected from Boichi. Volume 2 picks up after Ace has been taken in by the Whitebeard pirates after challenging Whitebeard to a duel. He loses. But, Whitebeard says to keep on challenging him.
This happens throughout the entire volume until finally there's a solid match between the two of them and Ace is satisfied.
Ace's respect for Whitebeard, and mine, grows and grows throughout the story. Whitebeard is a force of nature and Ace is plotting, planning, and growing in these battles with him. Each battle more interesting than the last.
While the story is one of personal growth in Volume 2, a lot less actually happens compared to Volume 1. That's not necessarily bad, but just a word of note. It ends with Ace and his entire Spade Pirate crew formally joining the Whitebeard Pirates, followed by a flashforward to after the events of Marineford which...is emotional for those who have read it in One Piece. If you have not, I suggest skipping this until you have.
The volume ends with Boichi's adaptation of One Piece Nami vs Kalifa, which happened during the Enies Lobby Arc around Chapter 411 of the manga. It is a well done adaptation, but it also serves as a reminder of how Boichi draws female characters. And how leery he can be from time to time. Just note: some of the angles were drawn to emphasize things.
Overall, though, glad I read this side story.
