I've been watching Joe Edelman's photography videos on YouTube. He's such a practical and pragmatic photographer.
Much of my photography is for events where working space can be at a premium so having a big collection of lights isn't always practical.
I have allowed myself the luxury of 100cm (39 inch) umbrellas and a decent lighting stand to use my speedlite with them.
It was heartening to see Edelman suggest that you should start with a single light and modifier and progress from there. His emphasis is to master your lighting technique one-at-a-time.
I've also invested in a second stand and a 120cm by 80cm, 5-in-1, collapsible reflector to provide passive fill lighting. I think that more needs to be said on the usefulness of reflectors.
Anyway, to cut to the chase, I just received a job offer for an event and was asked if I could take some informal individual shots of the participants. The timing really couldn't be better and it encourages me to play with lighting setups beforehand.
