Sami Kelsh is a tired bearI just keep returning to these lil guys and their lil cabin on a lil lake in Québec. They go on lil adventures here and there, but it’s nice to bring them home, to the lakeshore down the steps from the porch, where they swim some mornings when the weather is good, or just look out across the lake to the trees and mountains beyond.
Day 22 of #streamink2024 is Cottage Day, and I’m thinking of this cozy, rustic little home on the shore of Lac Escalier, where these two lil guys like to start the day with a really good cup of coffee.

You know those secondhand bookstores that seem to contain so many more shelves of wonders than you would have ever thought possible? These lil guys have been exploring for hours, but don’t worry - they’re intrepid adventurers, and they’ll find their way when they’re ready. This took me a month to paint because of just how packed with books is, and because I like it quite a bit, I made it a print!

Shoutout to me for mixing this watercolour set with cobalt turquoise. This first piece with this palette was a fun exercise in figuring out how the heck to paint rocks and waterfalls, and also whether it’s within twitch’s rules to paint this level of artistic birthday suit. In my defense, you can’t see their doodles, but they weren’t expecting to find a perfect, beautiful pool of pristine water in their travels and hadn’t brought any trunks.
Sometimes a fever dream of an idea grabs you by the lapels and will not let you go until you paint it. That’s what happened with Baba Yaga station. Torontonians may recognise that it's is inspired by Spadina station, which used to be a house, and was enough of a significant building that they just built a subway entrance directly into it. I’m pretty sure the upper portion of the building is still a habitable home. Wacky!

It’s hotter than the depths of Heck here in Englandshire this week, so pardon me if I find myself waxing nostalgical about the brisk and bracing breeze of a good winter evening right at blue hour. This piece is a print in my shop if you also want to live vicariously through these fellows, on their way to snuggle down under a comfy duvet, and not starfish in front of an electric fan with too much of a headache to sleep 😭
I’ve been so nervous about posting this because it took a very long time to paint - getting all those tiny books painted was about 16 hours over a month? I just wanted to send these two on a date to a bookshop where every mismatched shelf is packed full of every conceivable book you might be looking for, and there are plenty of quiet corners among the wiggidy-wonky stacks to hide and quietly thumb through a comprehensive guide to local birds, or have a little cuddle.
