Self-hosting does seem achievable! I was excited to see this recent tutorial from #NICAR23 (using Python not R but it is a recent reference)

P.S. Rip-off seems a bit strong to me! I'm a very regular user of the Mapbox free tier static map service and appreciate that folks are willing and able to pay.

Release Notes: How to make self-hosted maps that work everywhere and cost next to nothing

Can we build a better way to build — and maintain — maps? DocumentCloud developer Chris Amico shares his recent work exploring new advances and opportunities when it comes to self-hosting maps.

During a beta release at #NICAR23, we gathered feedback, ideas and inspiration from a focus group of reporters interested in covering money in politics.

In the time since we addressed those issues by overhauling the site via our GitHub code-repository.

Belatedly, here's the slides/links for my talk ("Security Research for Stories") at #NICAR23 last week:
https://tig.as/nicar23

A couple fun highlights:
* creating your own local flight tracking database with dump1090 + a script that copies the data into a MySQL DB
* running Charles/mitmproxy with SSL interception to investigate mobile app traffic
* using DKIM/ARC to gauge how legit a purported email may be

Fyra dagars konferens är över och jag är lite slut men också fullproppad med ny info, nya idéer och verktyg. Finns inget som slår NICAR när det gäller #datajournalistik. #nicar23 #ddj

Good morning, #NICAR23. Before I catch my flight home, I'll be hacking at the high tables in the hotel lobby.

We've got a pile a tickets from yesterday's launch party. Come by and help me close 'em. Or just hang. https://twitter.com/palewire/status/1632132828363374592
