Self-hosting does seem achievable! I was excited to see this recent tutorial from #NICAR23 (using Python not R but it is a recent reference)

P.S. Rip-off seems a bit strong to me! I'm a very regular user of the Mapbox free tier static map service and appreciate that folks are willing and able to pay.

* creating your own local flight tracking database with dump1090 + a script that copies the data into a MySQL DB
* running Charles/mitmproxy with SSL interception to investigate mobile app traffic
