That’s dangerous thinking.
Even worse is the giddy excitement coming from parts of his base. The chest thumping, the calls of Carney next, the casual acceptance of authoritarian behaviour as long as it hurts someone they don’t like. That kind of bloodlust has no place in Canadian politics. None. We are not a country that celebrates lawlessness just because it’s wrapped in a flag we recognize. Take note of those people.
If you believe in democracy, you believe in rules, even when they’re inconvenient. Especially when they’re inconvenient. You don’t get to abandon international law because Trump feels powerful this week. You don’t get to clap like trained seals while another country’s sovereignty is trampled.
Canada’s role in the world should be measured, principled, and lawful. Not reactive. Not ideological. And certainly not aligned with a man who treats the global order like a reality TV stunt.
Poilievre’s, approval should worry anyone who cares about where this country is headed. Because once you normalize lawlessness abroad, it’s only a matter of time before someone tries it at home.
