Silicon nanospheres for improved gravitational-wave detection

Researchers from Leibniz University Hannover and colleagues have simulated the properties of a silicon nanosphere metasurface mirror on a sapphire substrate. The material has several advantages compared to the dielectric mirror coatings currently in use: it avoids internal friction between multiple layers of different material and promises lower mechanical loss and less resulting displacement noise.

Glassy eyes may help young #crustaceans hide from predators in plain sight https://www.sciencenews.org/article/glassy-eyes-young-crustaceans-predators Paper: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf2062

#Nanospheres in the organs reflect light that matches the color of surrounding water. The spheres are a bit like disco balls, with highly reflective surfaces pointing outward. These balls are arranged in clusters at the base of protein-dense cones that focus light on the animal’s light-sensing nerves, and form a protective cover over the pigmented cells.

Nanospheres in the eye reflect light that matches the color of the surrounding water, possibly making the animals invisible to nearby predators.
