I think the biggest issue is that the community hasn't yet gotten big enough for there to be enough posting to force them to start being more diligent in using hashtags.
Everyone's just kind of barfing up everything under #MagicTheGathering or #MTG, and more specialized tags like #MTGBuySell, #MTGtrading, #MTGfinance, etc., haven't really started entering the everyday discourse.
I'm looking forward to the day that happens, but I think you did the right thing for the time being...
