The present book takes the ideas in my Metaskill book further and shows how my thinking has evolved…

…metaskills refers to the…qualities that infuse all the practical skills we learn… Metaskills bring our skills to life and make them most effective. … They are a reflection of our basic attitudes that cannot be held or easily grasped in the same way as our learned skills. Yet, they are as important and influential as any particular “methods” we use—perhaps even more so.

…it is not enough to emulate the…qualities of…other…people in our lives or behave “as if’ we have these qualities. For better or worse, it is not possible to program ourselves… This work stresses the importance of the awareness of the feeling attitudes that arise spontaneously inside of us as opposed to prescribing which feelings to have.

The focus on attitudes suggests further study of what we actually do… It is one thing to espouse certain beliefs and quite another to manifest these in practice…

By looking at…basic beliefs and feelings…we are confronting the very…container which holds and produces all other skills. … It is possible to remove a plant (technique) from its soil and transplant it in another spot. In so doing, however, the original ground…may be lost.

The study of metaskills suggests viewing…work…in a new way. … There is too little focus on the actual, momentary attitudes…

Techniques can never really fully describe what we do. … Students…sometimes look quite mechanical because they attempt to apply techniques in a neutral fashion. It is as though they have picked the flower out of the earth and used it without reference to its roots and origin.

Imagine for a moment two people who use a hammer. One of these people uses a lot of force when pounding on a nail. The other uses a more gentle and cautious approach. The tool is the same, but the way of using the tool is very different… Even though both people perform the same task—pounding a nail in the wall—the whole flavor and ambiance of this hammering is different. This insight is a first step in distinguishing techniques from the attitudes behind them.

We [Arny & Amy] watched “in action” many therapists about whom I had only read previously. It was thrilling to see their styles, their particular nuances and the way their unique personalities mingled with their therapeutic skills. I was excited to see how theoretical ideas and techniques came to life in living practice.
I remember watching a video tape of Fritz Perls, the founder of Gestalt therapy, and then a tape of Dick Price… Both men identified themselves as Gestalt therapists and used similar Gestalt tools. Yet, the way they practiced Gestalt therapy during these particular sessions was radically different. Perls had a confrontational and directive style while Price…was more…open and gentle in his interactions with his clients.
This made a strong impression on me…
