Arsenal prepared to make a formal bid to Newcastle for Bruno Guimaraes after seeing a verbal offer via intermediaries of around £55m turned down. Newcastle insist they don’t wish to sell, but direct club-to-club contact is now anticipated.

As reported yesterday, Alex Scott, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Sandro Tonali other names on the radar. Matheus Fernandes has also been looked at, but Spurs and Manchester United more advanced as it stands.

Overlap with other Premier League clubs for each target. #MCFC want another midfielder post Elliot Anderson.

Spurs also want to sign two midfielders.

Manchester United will add at least one more midfielder.

And Chelsea and Liverpool could also explore a central midfield reinforcement.

Some weird stuff going round about the Elliot Anderson fee. This is it ⬇️ (and this was always it). Confirmed at both ends. #NFFC #MCFC

Is Elliot Anderson worth £116m? Not yet. But he could be. He’s only 23, still developing, still needing to add assists and goals to his game. Centre-mid currently has 6 goals, 13 assists in 119 PL games. But Anderson's passing is already top class, especially that first-time driven ball to feet. His tackling, positioning and covering are already exceptional. Keeps the shape.

Anderson's work ethic and professionalism will ensure he improves further at Manchester City. Everywhere Anderson has gone, he’s developed: Bristol Rovers on loan (he's still loved there), Newcastle United until sold (against everyone’s wishes bar the PSR accountants), Nottingham Forest (hugely popular), England Under-21s (champion), England senior team (starter).

The fee and size of club will not faze him. Little does. He’s driven. £116m is a huge amount but of course there’s the England inflation tax, home-grown quota element, and Evangelos Marinakis is understandably a tough negotiator. City need his dynamism in midfield to support Rodri (and perhaps as his long-term successor).

Anderson’s elite mindset, as well as his ability, should help justify the fee eventually. Some care required as Anderson will need a proper break after England’s World Cup – he’s had a busy few years and summers (and emotional time recently with his beloved mother passing away).

But he is very good and all those coaches who helped his development, starting at Wallsend Boys Club, can take credit and pride. It's also good news for England that the saga is over. #NFFC #ENG #MCFC
