Gueule d'atmosphèreI first learned the word "gambit" from a French language chess book. It was explained as a move that may appear brilliant but is in fact inferior to the known best move in a given situation; only effective on those who don't know better.
I know that's not quite the definition in English (or perhaps even in chess), but that word will never be un-ironic to me.
