The Washington Post’s motto since 2017 has been “Democracy dies in darkness.” But media owners will have no problem in turning off the lights, if it means protecting their bottom line. Democracy dies without free press, and the press dies without free speech. In the 10th year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack, I feel there is a more insidious threat to cartoonists creeping under the surface, trying to curtail our ability to speak truth to power.
