W ciągu 20 lat od przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej życie wielu osób zmieniło się pod prawie każdym względem. Dołączając do Europejskiej Wspólnoty, mieliśmy nadzieję na trwałe, pozytywne zmiany, ale i obawialiśmy się zobowiązań wynikających z Traktatu akcesyjnego, czyli umowy określającej zasady wstąpienia do Unii Europejskiej. Czy ostatecznie się nam to opłacało? Biorąc pod uwagę poniesione koszty oraz wpływ środków unijnych na rozwój kraju, bilans członkostwa jest zdecydowanie dodatni. Wzrost gospodarczy nastąpił wskutek zmian w infrastrukturze transportowej, społecznej i energetycznej.
